The much-awaited Metro 3, also known as the Aqua line, has reached a crucial stage as loaded integrated trials are set to commence on the Phase 1 Aarey-Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) route. Previously, dry runs with empty coaches were conducted to test the metro's designed speeds of up to 95 kmph.
Loaded trials involve filling each coach of the eight-car train with stone-filled gunny bags based on the train's tonnage capacity to simulate the weight of passengers. This comprehensive testing ensures the functionality of the trains under operational conditions before opening to passengers. The trials are expected to start by the end of April and will meticulously assess various factors, including the oscillation of coaches on straight tracks and curvatures, to prioritise safety.
The decision to conduct thorough trials underscores the commitment to ensuring passenger safety. Following the loaded trials, the Research, Design, and Safety Organisation (RDSO) and the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) will meticulously inspect various parameters of Metro 3 to certify its operations.
Notably, Metro 3 features an eight-car train with a 75% motor, a significant enhancement compared to other metro lines with 50% motors. This innovative design warrants closer scrutiny during trials to ensure optimal operations.
As of now, the project stands at an impressive 96% completion rate, with station beautification, final touch-ups, and minor adjustments taking up most of the remaining work. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) boasts a fleet of 19 rakes, more than sufficient to operate Phase 1 of the underground metro corridor, accommodating an estimated 17 lakh daily passengers.
Efforts are also underway to ensure multimodal integration of stations, enhancing connectivity with other modes of public transport for last-mile connectivity. Additionally, provisions for footpaths, seating arrangements, foot overbridges, route indicators, and signages are being prioritised to enhance the commuter experience.
Moreover, connectivity between Aarey Depot and the Metro 3 line, including the completion of the shunting neck, facilitates seamless movement of metro trains for trials. Work on Phase 2 of Metro 3 (BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk, Worli) is progressing well, alongside efforts to obtain the necessary certification for operating in automatic train operation (ATO) mode.
Metro 3's ability to operate unmanned underscores its advanced technological features, ensuring efficiency and safety. As the project advances towards completion, meticulous testing and preparations underscore the commitment to delivering a world-class metro system to the residents of Mumbai.
