Completion of Coastal Road-BWSL linkage expected by April 16th

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is getting ready for launching a vital 120-metre girder with a bowstring arch. This girder will connect the southbound part of the coastal road with the Bandra-Worli sea link. The operation is planned for April 16-17 and is a major step forward in Mumbai's infrastructure progress.
M M Swami, deputy chief engineer of the coastal road project, highlighted the challenges posed by the rocky seabed, making conventional lifting and assembly methods unfeasible. Instead, the BMC opted for a meticulous plan involving the assembly of the 120-metre bowstring arch bridge at the Nhava village jetty, which will then be loaded onto a barge for transportation to the Worli site.
The erection of the arch bridge, spanning 850 metres with 270 metres of steel and the remainder in concrete, is a testament to the engineering prowess involved in the project. AECOM, the BMC's general consultant, played a pivotal role in managing contracts and designs, ensuring seamless coordination among stakeholders.
The project encountered revisions and objections, notably altering the navigation span from 60 to 120 metres. Vipul Surana, AECOM's team leader, emphasised the collaborative efforts to address design complexities and uphold safety standards. The involvement of Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and Hyundai Development Corporation Joint Venture added expertise in executing the project's intricate requirements.
Surana emphasised the importance of favourable weather conditions for the lifting operation, necessitating careful planning and safety measures. Despite challenges, progress on the northbound arm is also underway, with one girder already launched and plans for additional launches in April and May.
The BMC's effort to connect important roads shows its dedication to improving Mumbai's transportation network and infrastructure. As the launch date nears, everyone will be watching this project closely to see the coastal road and Bandra-Worli sea link come together successfully. It's a major milestone in Mumbai's journey of urban development.
