Thane, well known as the City of Lakes, recently introduced a magnificent addition to its urban landscape with the launch of the Grand Central Park in Kolshet. Stretching across 20.5 acres, this vast public sanctuary was inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on February 8, marking a significant milestone in the city's development.
Thane's Grand Central Park is an example of creative urban design, reflecting the majesty of New York's Grand Central Park and the peaceful surroundings of London's Hyde Park. Private developer Kalpataru has carefully designed the park, which is part of the Suvidha plot development project headed by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). It represents the symbiotic link between public welfare and private enterprise, having been designed and developed as an amenity space in exchange for the transfer of development rights (TDR).
Featuring an impressive collection of over 3,500 tree species, the park is a biodiversity hotspot that promises an enriching experience for all visitors. Its layout includes four themed gardens — a Mughal garden, a Chinese park, a Moroccan park that celebrates Moroccan culture, and a Japanese park — each offering a unique glimpse into different world cultures. The park is equipped with a variety of amenities tailored for recreation and fitness, including the country’s largest skating yard, a jogging track, lawn tennis and volleyball courts, children's play areas, and designated spaces for yoga and meditation. An expansive open-air amphitheater adds to the park’s allure, providing a venue for community events and performances.
The Grand Central Park also positions itself as a sanctuary for birdwatching enthusiasts, thanks to its water bodies that attract diverse bird species. This initiative is part of Thane's broader commitment to enhancing green spaces, which includes the management of a two-acre butterfly garden near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
