Commuting from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to South Mumbai is anticipated to become considerably smoother within a week as the finishing touches are being applied to a vital infrastructure project. The flyover, which connects Terminal 2 (T2) of the international airport via the Sahar Elevated Road over the Western Express Highway (WEH), is on track to be operational by February 15.
An official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) remarked that the flyover on Western Express Highway is almost complete, with only a few miscellaneous works remaining. Measuring 790 meters in length, this flyover is set to reduce the persistent traffic around the Vile Parle traffic signal outside the domestic terminal on WEH.
While the flyover's completion date is nearing, there is uncertainty regarding when the elevated road will be accessible to motorists. It's speculated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may inaugurate several infrastructure projects in Mumbai later this month, including the Coastal Road, though it's yet to be determined if the elevated flyover will be among them.
The construction of this flyover started in June 2021, with an initial estimated cost of 248.43 crore. Currently, motorists departing from T2 and heading towards Bandra or South Mumbai often find themselves stuck in hours-long traffic jams on WEH near the domestic airport signal, making the completion of the flyover a significant relief for commuters.
As the city eagerly awaits the operationalization of this crucial link, it is hoped that the impending inauguration of several infrastructural projects will further enhance connectivity and ease congestion across Mumbai's transportation network. The imminent completion of the flyover underscores the ongoing efforts to modernize and improve the city's infrastructure, promising a smoother and more efficient commute for residents and visitors alike.
