Eros Cinema, Mumbai's iconic 90-year-old architectural masterpiece, is set to reopen as a cutting-edge 305-seater IMAX theatre. After a seven-year absence, the cinema will reopen with a screening of Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon's "Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya". This historic reopening is a crucial milestone in Mumbai's cultural scene, bringing new life to a beloved icon.
Shiavax Cawasji Cambata, a Parsi businessman, commissioned Eros Cinema in 1935 as a multifunctional space that included not only a cinema theatre but also retail businesses and residential quarters. The cinema, which was designed by architect Sohrabji Bhedwar, opened to the public on February 10, 1938, and was named after the Greek god of love and passion.
Eros Cinema grew into more than just a movie theatre; it became an important element of Mumbai's identity, synonymous with entertainment and architectural magnificence. However, in April 2017, this renowned theatre closed its doors citing structural issues.
Fast forward to now, and Eros Cinema is experiencing a spectacular metamorphosis, owing to the work of conservation architect Kirtida Unwalla and her colleagues. With a strong awareness of the cinema's historical value, Unwalla began a thorough restoration adventure in 2019, hoping to retain its Art Deco elegance while incorporating modern comforts.
Upon entering the reconstructed cinema, visitors are struck with the grandeur of the original Art Deco aesthetics, which have been lovingly restored to their former brilliance. The circular lobby, embellished with Italian black and white marbles and gold accents, exudes timeless beauty. The famous hexagonal lifts and towering staircases, which were once paths to cinematic wonders, now lead to retail spaces on the first floor, preserving the building's multifaceted history.
Unwalla's repair work went beyond the surface, diving into the structure of the building. The outside walls remained strong, but the roof and floors required substantial repairs. With thorough attention to detail, Unwalla maintained and brought back the cinema's architectural characteristics, such as the sculpted bas-relief panels portraying film production stages.
The restoration trip was not without difficulties, as the COVID-19 epidemic caused delays and logistical issues. Despite these challenges, Unwalla and her team persevered, devoting two years to revitalising Eros Cinema and restoring its standing as a cultural institution.
Metro Realty, the building's current leaseholder, worked with famous architects such as Hafeez Contractor and Talati & Partners to achieve a careful balance between maintaining legacy and embracing innovation. Akshat Gupta, managing partner of Metro Realty, underlined the significance of preserving the cinema's red carpet tradition while incorporating cutting-edge technology and services.
With the restoration effort completed, Eros Cinema is set to retake its due status as a shining example of cinematic excellence in Mumbai. The move to a 305-seat IMAX cinema run by PVR Inox marks a new chapter in the company's illustrious history, assuring spectators an unforgettable viewing experience. As the curtains rise again at Eros Cinema, it demonstrates the continuing power of culture and legacy in forming our common identity. With its blend of old-world beauty and modern refinement, Eros Cinema represents Mumbai's rich cultural fabric.
