Nashik Municipal Corporation takes strong measures to recover property taxes

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) plans to initiate a campaign in January 2024 to recover overdue property taxes. NMC Commissioner Ashok Karanjkar has instructed civic body officials to achieve the property tax collection goal of Rs 210 crore by the end of December this fiscal year.
Despite having just a few days left in December, the NMC has currently collected Rs148 crore, approximately 70% of the tax collection target. This indicates a remaining Rs 62 crore to reach the property tax goal.
In November, the NMC issued initial notices to more than 2 lakh defaulters, urging them to settle their tax obligations. However, only Rs30 crore has been received out of the total Rs150 crore dues.
Nevertheless, the NMC plans to address previous tax defaulters by issuing warrants to seize their properties. NMC officials stated that they will issue warrants to property tax defaulters, providing them with a 21-day ultimatum to settle their tax arrears. Failure to comply will result in the confiscation of their properties.
Considering other measures, NMC officials are contemplating disconnecting water services for property tax defaulters as a means to collect outstanding taxes.
Additionally, NMC intends to identify properties that, despite having received building completion certificates (BCCs), remain untaxed. According to NMC officials, around 10,000 properties are underutilized, yet property taxes have not been imposed on them.
The head of NMC has instructed relevant officials to pursue state and central government departments, urging them to settle their outstanding property and water tax payments.
