BBMP begins property records digitization to improve tax collection efforts

In a bid to curb property tax evasion and enhance revenue collection, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated the process of digitizing more than 40 lakh properties within the city. According to senior officials from the BBMP's revenue department, they have already commenced digitizing property documents in four specific wards, namely Kodigehalli, CV Raman Nagar, Horamavu, and Arakere. The objective is to complete this digitization for all wards within a three-month timeframe.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had recently expressed dissatisfaction with property tax collection within the BBMP jurisdiction and announced the "Nanna Swathu" (My Property) initiative, which involves the digitization of all properties. In response to Shivakumar's directive, BBMP's revenue officials have promptly initiated the digitization process.
An official explained that revenue officials are currently scanning all documents related to each property to convert them into digital format. This digitization effort will make precise property details available online, reducing the chances of misrepresentation.
The BBMP hopes that this move will lead to an increase in tax collection. Currently, the BBMP collects property tax in the range of Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 4,000 crore annually. BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath informed reporters that revenue officials are sending reminders to tax defaulters, who will face penalties if they fail to settle their dues before November 30.
Munish Moudgil, the BBMP Special Commissioner for Revenue, emphasized that property tax constitutes the primary source of revenue for the corporation, and property owners are encouraged to pay their taxes promptly. To facilitate this, the BBMP is sending SMS messages and letters/notices to individuals, providing information about their property tax dues.
