Gurugram's Chintels Paradiso apartment owners held a significant demonstration at Jantar Mantar this Sunday, voicing their mounting frustration over being coerced into leaving their homes without adequate compensation. This outcry stems from long-standing grievances that the development utilized subpar construction materials which has caused the buildings to be unsafe for people to live. They allege that the Department of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) turned a blind eye towards this and gave away the occupancy certificate for a building they now deem unsafe.
In the midst of their struggle, these residents found themselves caught between a rock and a hard place. While they are pressured to evacuate by the administration, the developer remains unresponsive to their demands for reasonable rental provisions for alternative living arrangements or a fair buyout price based on current market valuations.
To escalate their concerns and seek government intervention, the residents dispatched a comprehensive memorandum to both the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Their primary plea is to have their homes reconstructed to ensure safety and proper habitability. They made a pointed appeal to Prime Minister Modi with the slogan 'Ghar Ke Badle Ghar' (A house in exchange for a house).
Residents expressed their dismay at the perceived inaction of local authorities, prompting their protest. Drawing parallels to another residential dispute, Manoj Singh, a resident of Chintels Paradiso, referenced Delhi's Signature View Apartment case where the developer was made responsible to either rebuild or afford market-standard rents until a satisfactory handover.
In a twist to the tale, the residents claim there's a misuse of the disaster management act by the district administration, which, they suspect, is tilted in favor of the developer. This misuse allegedly pressures residents into accepting a refund proposal that doesn’t match the market value.
