The Uttarakhand Government has taken a significant step forward in its efforts to develop ski destinations and ropeways by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) totalling Rs. 8,000 crore. This strategic move holds the potential to not only enhance the state's infrastructure but also significantly increase tourist footfall, thereby boosting the tourism sector. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recently travelled to London to finalize these MoUs, signalling a promising future for Uttarakhand's recreational and transportation offerings.
One of the prominent agreements involves Kyan Jet, a boutique Airport service provider, committing Rs. 2,100 Crore to establish a skiing resort and a Rs. 1,700 Crore cable car project, resulting in a combined MoU worth Rs. 3,800 Crore.
Another critical partnership has been forged with Usha Breco, a renowned ropeway company specializing in the construction, operation, and maintenance of ropeways in India. This collaboration aims to develop ropeway systems in Haridwar and other districts, enhancing connectivity and accessibility.
Furthermore, the Poma group of France has signed a significant MoU worth Rs. 2,000 crore. Their expertise will be pivotal in advising on the development of Dehradun-Mussoorie and Yamunotri ropeways, further contributing to the state's transportation infrastructure.
In a landmark investment, Mahindra Holiday and Resort India Limited have pledged Rs. 1,000 crore, marking the largest such commitment in India. As a prominent developer of resorts, the Mahindra group intends to establish four to five resorts in the state, enriching the tourism experience.
Collectively, these MoUs represent a total investment of Rs. 11,000 crore from various companies. While these developments hold great promise, it is essential to exercise caution and avoid construction in landslide-prone areas, as identified in the landslide hazard zonation (LHZ). Strict adherence to construction guidelines is imperative, given the hilly terrain and occasional seismic activity.
The fragile ecosystem of the Himalayas underscores the importance of eco-friendly development. Ropeway systems in locations such as Dayara Bugyal, Auli, and Munsiyari in Kumaon, situated above 7,000 ft. in the upper Himalayas, must prioritize sustainability and environmental preservation. Ropeways offer not only convenience for tourists but also create livelihood opportunities for local communities.
In conclusion, the development of ski resorts and ropeways in Uttarakhand represents a significant stride towards enhancing tourism and infrastructure. By adhering to eco-friendly principles and prioritizing safety, these projects will not only benefit tourists but also align with environmental goals, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for the state.
