Major repair and renovation initiatives planned for Sir JJ Group of Hospitals in Mumbai

Sir JJ Group of Hospitals, which includes four state-run hospitals—Sir JJ Hospital, St. George's Hospital, Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital, and Cama & Albless Hospital—is set to undergo extensive repair and renovation works worth crores of rupees. This decision comes in the wake of concerns raised by the Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) regarding the deteriorating condition of healthcare facilities in some state-run hospitals across Maharashtra.

Among the significant projects included in the recently floated tender is a comprehensive revamp of the medicine department at Sir JJ Hospital, estimated to cost approximately Rs 1.6 crore. Additionally, the scope of work encompasses repair and maintenance for student hostels, nurses' quarters, and resident medical officer quarters at the same hospital.

Another critical aspect of the renovation plan addresses leakage issues at the Outpatient Department (OPD) building and the nurses' hostel at Cama & Albless Hospital. Repair works for these areas have been allocated a budget of Rs 14,08,495.

Dr. Pallavi Saple, the dean of JJ Hospital, highlighted the process of work selection stating that they submited their requirements, based on which the necessary repairs are prioritized. The internal repairs will be executed ward-by-ward. The Public Works Department (PWD) is also focusing on repairs to toilets and staff quarters. Earlier this year, Rs. 113 crore was earmarked for the renovation of student hostels at the hospital.

However, concerns have been raised not only about repairs but also about the shortage of hostels at the hospital. According to its doctors, the current hostel facilities can comfortably accommodate only 250 to 300 doctors, whereas the hospital receives over 1,200 resident doctors annually. Plans for new hostel construction have been proposed, but it is expected to take several more years for all the necessary approvals to be obtained and for construction to commence.

In conclusion, Sir JJ Group of Hospitals is gearing up for significant repair and renovation projects to address various infrastructure issues, including the revitalization of the medicine department, tackling leakage problems, and improving accommodation for resident doctors. These efforts are in response to concerns raised by MARD and aim to enhance the healthcare infrastructure and overall facilities provided by the hospitals.
