Bengaluru authorities intensify measures against illegal construction waste disposal

In a decisive move to curb the unauthorized dumping of construction waste and debris, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced stringent measures against violators. The civic body has issued a stern warning, stating that those found guilty of such illicit activities will face legal consequences and hefty fines.

BBMP officials, encompassing roles such as supervisors, junior health inspectors, ward marshals, and marshal supervisors, have been directed to monitor vehicles transporting construction waste. These inspections will span from the jurisdiction of the BBMP to the city's peripheries. Vehicles found in violation will not only be fined but may also be confiscated. In such cases, local police stations will be alerted for subsequent actions.

BBMP Chief Commissioner, Tushar Giri Nath, emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting the detrimental impact of unauthorized waste disposal on Bengaluru's image and environment. He further highlighted that the onus of proper waste disposal lies primarily with the waste generator.

Nath stressed the importance of adhering to proper waste disposal protocols. Construction waste should be methodically collected and transported to designated treatment facilities. The BBMP's stance aligns with the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules-2016, which strictly prohibits the dumping of construction waste in public areas, roadsides, drains, empty plots, or quarries. Such acts are not only punishable offenses but also violate environmental norms.

The statement from the BBMP further clarified the penalties for non-compliance. Offenders, including waste collectors, transporters, and generators, will be subjected to a fine of Rs 10,000 per ton. Additionally, legal actions will be initiated under the aegis of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, as per the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

In conclusion, The BBMP's renewed commitment to combatting unauthorized waste disposal underscores the importance of maintaining Bengaluru's environmental integrity and urban aesthetics. With stringent measures in place, the city aims to deter potential violators and ensure a cleaner, greener Bengaluru for its residents and visitors.
