Tragic elevator collapse in thane construction site claims six lives

In a heart-wrenching incident on Sunday, six construction workers lost their lives, and another was critically injured when an elevator plummeted from the 13th floor of an under-construction building in Balkum, Thane. The tragedy unfolded in the evening as the workers were descending after completing their day's tasks.

The 40-storey structure, a project by Runwal Group company, Dhruva Woollen Mills Pvt Ltd, became the site of sorrow when the elevator's shaft malfunctioned, causing the lift to crash into the basement of the underground parking area. The Thane Municipal Corporation's disaster cell confirmed the details of the mishap.

Among the deceased, five have been identified as Mahendra Choupal (32), Rupesh Das (21), Haroon Shaikh (42), Mithilesh (35), and Karidas (38). Efforts are underway to identify the sixth victim. Sunil Das (21), the sole survivor, is currently receiving medical attention at the district government hospital. Questions have arisen regarding the safety and integrity of the elevator, while the local police have initiated a thorough investigation 

In response to the tragedy, Dhruva Woollen Mills Pvt Ltd released a statement detailing the incident. They mentioned, “The elevator, which was under regular surveillance, had its last maintenance check on August 23. All necessary procedures, including oiling, brake settings, and lift room inspections, were duly carried out by the service provider.” 

The company emphasized the recent assessment report that vouched for the elevator's good condition. They concluded by saying, “We are fully cooperating with the authorities in their investigations and have mobilized our team of experts to delve deeper into the cause of this unfortunate event.”
