Police Housing Corporation to receive unsold TNHB houses

The Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) is facing a significant challenge with nearly 8,000 unsold houses spread across the state. However, a solution is now on the horizon as the board has made the decision to allocate over 2,800 of these houses to police personnel in the Sholinganallur and Athipattu areas of Chennai under the 'own your house' scheme facilitated by the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation Limited (TNPHCL).

Recognizing the urgency to address the issue, the TNHB is actively seeking an agency to handle the sale of the remaining houses. Officials have expressed optimism, noting that there has been a recent surge in demand for these properties. This positive development comes after the houses faced scrutiny for substandard construction in certain regions.

Housing and urban development minister S Muthusamy has been vocal about the efforts to sell the unsold houses while considering renting out the remaining units. In a bid to assess the situation firsthand, Director General of Police C Sylendra Babu and TNPHCL Chairman A K Viswanathan visited the Sholinganallur site, which currently has over 1,000 unsold units. Viswanathan expressed the corporation's interest in acquiring houses under the HIG (High-Income Group), MIG (Middle-Income Group), and LIG (Low-Income Group) schemes in bulk, albeit at a discounted rate of 20%

This matter was recently deliberated upon during a TNHB meeting, where it was unanimously decided to offer the houses at a reduced price to police personnel. Viswanathan further elaborated on the decision, stating that these houses would prove highly beneficial for officers stationed in various regions, including the Commissionerate of Greater Chennai Police, Avadi, Tambaram, Avadi, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet. Consequently, police personnel will have the opportunity to purchase their own homes at a significantly discounted rate.

To ensure awareness and facilitate the process, an informative camp was organized at the project sites, with TNHB officials and representatives from public sector banks in attendance. This initiative aimed to provide police personnel with comprehensive knowledge and guidance regarding the available housing options.

The Sholinganallur project offers a diverse range of houses, from 700 sq. ft in the LIG category to over 1,100 sq. ft in the HIG category. Meanwhile, at Athipattu, the houses range between 400 sq. ft and 600 sq. ft.

By addressing the issue of unsold houses and providing affordable housing options for police personnel, the Tamil Nadu Housing Board and the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation Limited are working collaboratively to improve the lives of the police force while efficiently utilizing available resources. This endeavour not only acknowledges the dedication and sacrifices of the police personnel but also contributes to their overall well-being and quality of life.
