Post-2000 slums dwellers can buy 300 sqft. rehabilitation flat for Rs 2.5 lakh

Slum Dwellers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Pune now have the opportunity to acquire homes by paying a nominal fee of Rs 2.5 lakh, according to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This move comes as civic polls are scheduled to take place in various urban areas of the state. A government resolution outlining the details of the new initiative was issued recently.

Fadnavis highlighted the significance of a law enacted during his tenure as chief minister to protect slum dwellers who settled in Mumbai before the year 2000. However, for those who settled between 2000 and 2011, the state government used to charge a variable fee for allocating homes, which often proved unaffordable. Now, the government has decided to implement a standardized fee of Rs 2.5 lakh per house.

Satish Lokhande, the chief executive officer of the Slum Rehabilitation Department of the Maharashtra government, explained that previously the cost of such homes ranged between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 12 lakh, making them unaffordable for many individuals in the low-income group. Under the new scheme, there are currently 2,205 houses available for slum dwellers. Additionally, several schemes comprising 700 to 800 houses are in progress and will be completed in due course.

Lokhande emphasized that the scheme would be applicable in Mumbai, MMR, and Pune, the three regions where the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) is implemented. Slum Dwellers in these areas will have the opportunity to acquire homes by paying the fixed amount of Rs 2.5 lakh.

Furthermore, Fadnavis suggested that the 'home for Rs 2.5 lakh' scheme could be combined with the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), a housing scheme initiated by the central government, to provide further relief to individuals in need of affordable housing.

The announcement of this scheme is particularly significant as civic polls have been pending in various urban areas, including Mumbai, Thane (a part of MMR), and Pune, since early 2022. These elections were delayed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and now slum dwellers can look forward to the opportunity of owning their own homes at an affordable cost.
