NMC offers incentives for environmental initiatives alongside property tax rebates

The proposal to offer a 5 percent rebate for online property tax payments for the FY 2023-24 by Municipal Commissioner B Radhakrishnan is being well received. According to officials over 4,500 property owners have already paid their taxes, thereby available a discount of almost Rs 20 lacs. Those who pay their taxes before June 30, will receive an additional rebate of 10 percent. Payments made before December 31 will avail a 5 percent rebate.

The rebate amount is evaluated based on the total property tax component, with the exception of the education and employment guarantee scheme cess from the state administration.

According to official data released, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has collected around Rs 1.9 crores in property tax in April alone. Last year, before the implementation of an online payment system, the civic body managed to collect only Rs 35 lakh in property tax from 883 taxpayers. The total rebate issued last year amounted to roughly Rs 2.4 lacs.

In addition to the aforementioned incentives, the NMC has also been offering a discount of 5 percent to 10 percent on four environmentally programs, namely rainwater harvesting, waste decomposition, recycled wastewater usage, and rooftop solar system. If the property owner chooses to implement any of the four above-mentioned plans, they will receive a 5 percent reduction in their general tax. Furthermore, if they implement more than one plan, they can receive an additional 10 percent discount.

Individuals have the option to pay their property taxes through online channels by either accessing the property tax services tab on https://www(dot)nmcnagpur(dot)gov(dot)in/ or by directly visiting the CITIZEN PORTAL at https://geocivicnmcapp(dot)nmcptax(dot)com/Citizen Services/CitizenTax/index.html.

Nagpur's property tax is determined by a Unit Area System that takes into account various factors including the property's location, size, age, occupancy, and type. The amount of property tax imposed by the Nagpur civic body can vary based on the location, with properties on the outskirts of the city being subject to lower taxes compared to those situated in the city centre.
