Lalruatkima, the Minister of Land Revenue and Settlement, has distributed property cards to 420 recipients under the central government's SVAMITVA (Survey of Villages and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas) Scheme in Mizoram, according to an official announcement.
The distribution took place in two Aizawl district villages, with 254 beneficiaries in Tachhip and 166 in Phulpui. This is part of the government's ongoing effort to provide legal ownership of residential lands to rural people, said the statement released by the Information and Public Relations department of the state.
Lalruatkima compared the property card to the Land Settlement Certificate (LSC), emphasizing its role in granting legal ownership of residential lands to rural dwellers. Besides this, the minister highlighted another significant advantage of the property card – its ability to convert residential properties into financial assets. This will empower beneficiaries to leverage their properties for obtaining loans and other financial benefits, including compensation.
SVAMITVA, a central sector scheme from the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2021. It is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, state's Revenue departments, and the Survey of India. The key goal of this initiative is to confer legal ownership rights to rural people over their residential properties, thereby enabling them to utilize these properties for economic gain.
In Mizoram, the scheme aims to cover 319 rural villages, with drone mapping of 171 villages currently underway. This initiative demonstrates a significant step forward in using technology to improve land ownership rights, particularly in rural areas.
