Officials from the city have identified 30,000 property owners who failed to pay their property taxes for the previous fiscal year. These property owners will now get notifications from civic bodies requesting them to pay their outstanding debts. In a few localities, officials have already begun to serve notifications. They will strive to recover outstanding amounts from defaulters during the following two months. Over 3.55 lakh tax returns were filed last year.
Meanwhile, current-year recoveries are moving well, as consumers will be able to get a 10 percent refund on the whole amount. The distribution of notifications has begun. Following the first warning, authorities were required to wait one month before providing defaulters with the sealing notice. Property tax produced Rs 125 crore for civic authorities in the previous fiscal year, exceeding a target of Rs 100 crore. They have now set a goal of Rs 125 crore.
According to sources, Municipal Corporation (MC) elections are coming this year, thus after elections are declared, workers will be assigned to election duties. They further claimed that ruling party administrators would not allow them to serve notices during the election, which would impede recovery.
Zonal Commissioner Jasdev Sekhon confirmed to the press that the process of retrieving outstanding debts has commenced. The Municipal Corporation commissioner Dr Shena Aggarwal has appealed to the residents to pay the tax on time to avoid penalties. She has stated that apart from paying tax in MC zonal suvidha kendras, residents can also submit tax online to avoid standing in long queues.
The government has made it mandatory for Ludhiana residents to get a unique identity (UID) number for their properties. This will assist authorities in identifying defaulters through property GIS mapping. The tax revenue is utilised to provide basic services to inhabitants as well as to fund city development projects.
In conclusion, the recovery of outstanding property taxes in Ludhiana has commenced, with civic authorities identifying 30,000 property owners who failed to pay their taxes for the previous fiscal year. The recovery process is crucial as property tax revenue is utilised to fund city development projects and provide basic services to inhabitants. The timely payment of taxes is essential to avoid penalties. Overall, the recovery of outstanding property taxes is essential for the growth and development of the city, and civic authorities must ensure that the process is carried out smoothly and efficiently.
