After a two-year delay, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation is finally ready to start installing unique identity number (UID) plates with QR codes on properties throughout the city. The cost of the plates, approximately Rs 60 each, will be covered under the Smart City Mission, with the total project cost now estimated to reach around Rs 5.75 crore. The UID plates will enable officials to quickly check whether property owners have cleared their dues by scanning the QR codes.
This project is a significant step towards efficient property management in Ludhiana. The UID tags will help streamline administrative processes by providing instant access to property information. Officials will be able to quickly verify the property ownership, tax payment status, and other relevant details, thereby reducing the time and resources spent on manual checks.

One of the challenges faced by the municipal corporation in implementing the UID tag system was the need to float tenders’ multiple times to hire a firm for the job. Cost variations and delays in project estimates further complicated matters. However, the officials managed to convince senior authorities in the local bodies department that re-tendering would waste more time and that cost increases were unavoidable due to the time elapsed since the project's initial proposal.
The project will also address the issue of 35,000 UID plates installed a few years ago without QR codes. The municipal corporation will need to determine how to update these plates to ensure consistency and compatibility with the new system.
The UID tag project has gained attention from Ludhiana residents, who have posted pictures on social media of UID number plates installed by the Jalandhar municipal corporation, questioning when their city would follow suit. The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation is now set to proceed with the installation of UID plates as soon as they receive approval from the technical advisory committee.
