The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has taken a significant step to protect the rights of flat owners in the city. A promoter who was involved in constructing an apartment building has already been booked by the building department after complaints from some flat owners. The promoter is currently being interrogated by civic officials. The KMC has contacted the promoter through the architect of a housing project in Survey Park, located off EM Bypass in Borough XII, and the executive engineer of Borough XII has been asked to check the promoter's track record before taking punitive action.
The KMC has received numerous complaints from citizens across the city about promoters who have fled after constructing an apartment building without applying for a completion certificate. Flat owners are left in trouble as they cannot apply for water or drainage connections without a completion certificate, and KMC inspectors often find deviations in such housing projects, branding them as illegal structures.
The mayor, Firhad Hakim, has frequently asked the buildings department to take action against a section of architects or licensed building surveyors for the sufferings of flat owners. The KMC is committed to protecting the rights of flat owners and will take all necessary steps to ensure that they receive the amenities and services promised to them.
