Residents of Hubballi, Dharwad can now pay property taxes via mobile

Jumping in on technology bandwagon, the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal corporation has announced the launch of a mobile application that will allow citizens to pay their property taxes directly via their cell phones. The new web and mobile-based technology will be operational beginning with the ensuing fiscal year. Previously HDMC generated tax challans using 20-year-old XP-based technology which has now been replaced by a new technology. Previously HDMC generated tax challans using 20-year-old XP-based technology which has now been replaced by a new technology.

Bank of Baroda has invested Rs 75 lakh as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) for the installation of this new technology. Earlier people were required to receive the challan from their respective HDMC zone office to pay their property tax. They then had to travel to the bank and wait in line to deposit the money. After making their payment they were instructed to return to the zonal office and pass over a copy of the challan so that it could be sealed and kept by them. The taxpayer would no longer have to deal with this hassle.

The outdated tax payment system discouraged people from paying their taxes on time, and many people who were eager to pay and take advantage of the April tax break were unable to do so because of the rush. The civic body hopes that the new mechanism will bring in healthy revenues for the HDMC while making payments simple for the people. HDMC expects to collect Rs 190 crore by the end of 2023-2024 on account of the introduction of this new technology.
