Dharavi Redevelopment Project gets possession of 27 acres of railway land

The project to rehabilitate residents of Dharavi, Asia's largest slum located in Mumbai, has achieved a major milestone with the acquisition of 27.6 acres of land out of the total 45 acres required. This land was handed over by the Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA) to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP).
The land will be used to construct modern housing and recreational facilities for railway employees as well as rehabilitation apartments for eligible residents of Dharavi. On March 13th, RLDA handed over various land parcels totalling 27.6 acres to DRP, including scrapyard land near Mahim railway station.
The DRP is the state government's nodal agency responsible for executing the redevelopment project spread across 600 acres of land and home to around 1.2 million people. Railway officials confirmed handing over possession of the land to DRP, with the remaining land to be transferred soon.
The complex will be designed by architect Hafeez Contractor. DRP has assured railways that the entire complex covering around 1 million square feet will be built within three years of receiving approval. The complex includes four multi-storey apartment blocks, of which three will be of 821 flats on 36 floors with modern amenities, a sport-cum-recreation complex, and a contemporary administration building.
DRP paid INR 1000 crore to railways for the land. An additional INR 2800 crore will be paid over 17 years through revenue sharing from the Dharavi redevelopment proceeds. The 27.6 acres included 15 acres of encroached land with 5000 tenements.
In 2019, the state govt reached a consensus with the Union railways ministry over the handover of over 45 acres. This was signed as a definitive agreement and executed on Oct 18, 2022. In November 2022, Adani group won the bid to redevelop Dharavi with an initial investment of INR 5069 crores.
