In the wake of a fake call centre racket discovery, Bidhannagar Police have requested Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs) in New Town to provide comprehensive lists of current tenants. Police officials plan to conduct unannounced visits to verify that the occupants match the information provided in previously submitted verification documents.
This initiative follows the recent exposure of fraudulent call centre operators running their schemes from residential properties in New Town and Salt Lake. A senior official from the Bidhannagar Commissionerate emphasized the need to create an updated database of tenants to enable random physical checks in the housing societies.
RWAs have been asked to compile tenant information, including tower and flat numbers, tenancy duration, occupancy status, tenant demographics, the number of occupants per flat, and contact information for brokers or landlords. Additional information is welcomed at the discretion of society members.
New Town and Salt Lake require landlords to submit tenant details, including identity, employment, residence history, and identification documentation, within the jurisdiction of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate. However, following the recent bust of a fake call centre racket, which recovered nearly Rs 4 crore in illegal funds, authorities recognized the need to strengthen the system.
Bidhannagar Police will now create a new tenant database and conduct surprise home visits to ensure the accuracy of submitted verification documents. The initiative has been well-received by residents.
In conclusion, the recent discovery of a fake call centre racket in New Town has prompted Bidhannagar Police to seek updated tenant lists from RWAs, as they plan to conduct surprise checks to ensure the safety of the community. The move has been welcomed by residents and will help to better protect citizens and address any potential vulnerabilities in the system.
New Town, also known as Rajarhat and Salt Lake, also known as Bidhannagar, are planned satellite cities located in the eastern part of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal, India. These cities were developed in the 1990s as a response to the growing population of Kolkata and the need for additional urban space.
New Town is managed by the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) and Salt Lake is managed by the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. Both cities are divided into several zones, each with its own focus on residential, commercial, or institutional development. They are home to several established IT companies, educational institutions and residential townships.
