VJTI Mumbai has submitted a comprehensive report to the BMC addressing the misalignment issue between Andheri's Gokhale Bridge and the CD Barfiwala Flyover. The report confirms that the Barfiwala Flyover's arms are structurally sound, eliminating the need for their complete demolition. Instead, the proposal suggests lifting the last four sections of the flyover and adjusting pedestals to align with the Gokhale Bridge. This solution aims to merge the two structures without compromising the integrity of the existing Barfiwala Flyover, which was built by MSRDC in 2008.
Dr. Abhay Bambole, Dean of Infrastructure and Maintenance at VJTI, highlighted the importance of utilising the existing bridge given its strong condition and extensive service life. The report outlines a phased approach, with the first phase involving the construction and opening of the north side carriageway of the Gokhale Bridge. To seamlessly integrate traffic from the Barfiwala Flyover, the last four spans will be lifted, and pedestals will be adjusted accordingly. Safety measures will be paramount during the lifting process, with provisions made for the replacement of bearings and expansion joints if necessary.
The timeline for phase one of the merger is estimated at 90 days, with work expected to commence after the conclusion of the current poll code of conduct, likely around June. The projected cost for the endeavour is approximately INR 8 crore, reflecting the complexity and scale of the operation.
The misalignment issue arose due to the elevated height of the new Gokhale Bridge, constructed to comply with railway guidelines. Despite this setback, the report assures that merging the two structures is feasible without compromising safety or structural integrity. The CD Barfiwala Flyover serves as a vital link between Juhu and the north-south arms of the Gokhale Bridge, a connection essential for efficient vehicular movement in the area.
The submission of the technical report by VJTI marks a significant step towards resolving the alignment issue and ensuring the seamless flow of traffic between the two crucial structures. With the arms of the Barfiwala Flyover deemed structurally sound, the focus now shifts to implementing the proposed solution in a timely and cost-effective manner, thereby addressing a longstanding concern for commuters and authorities alike.
