DDA introduces slum rehabilitation scheme 'Jahan Jhuggi Wahin Makan' in East Delhi

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) announced plans to undertake the development of three jhuggi clusters in East Delhi as part of its 'Jahan Jhuggi Wahin Makan' in-situ slum rehabilitation project. These clusters, comprising Kalandar Colony, Deepak Colony, and Dilshad Vihar Colony, accommodate approximately 4,000 households. Notably, this initiative marks the first in-situ rehabilitation effort in the entire trans-Yamuna Area, following similar projects in Kalkaji Extension, Jailorwala Bagh, and Kathputli Colony.
The in-situ rehabilitation project in Dilshad Garden, encompassing Kalandar Colony, Deepak Colony, and Dilshad Vihar Colony, will span approximately seven hectares. The development will feature multi-storeyed buildings equipped with modern amenities, aiming to uplift slum dwellers from their substandard living conditions.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena emphasized expediting the project during a meeting with senior officials of DDA, stressing the dire need for timely completion. The decision to prioritize this development came after Saxena's visit to Kalandar Colony in response to requests from local slum dwellers. Witnessing the dismal living conditions of 30,000-35,000 residents, he underscored the urgent need for improvement, highlighting the lack of basic amenities.
Responsibilities for providing basic amenities and public utilities in the area lie with the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for sanitation purposes, respectively.
Saxena directed the DDA to promptly prepare a detailed project report, including financial aspects, to expedite the process. He emphasized the importance of executing the project within a defined timeline, avoiding the delays that plagued past initiatives.
Overall, the initiative aims to address the dire living conditions of slum dwellers in East Delhi, emphasizing the importance of timely execution and collaboration between government bodies to provide essential amenities and improve quality of life for residents.
