In Noida, the Uttar Pradesh Government is planning the development of a new city off the Yamuna Expressway near Agra, called the New Agra Urban Centre. Spanning 10,500 hectares, which is half the size of Noida, this ambitious project aims to address the growing urbanisation and population rise expected in the region. The Yamuna Expressway Authority (YXPA) has initiated the process by inviting consultants to prepare a master plan for the proposed city.
The selected consultant will be tasked with outlining a comprehensive roadmap for the city's growth, including transportation connectivity with other cities and assessing the environmental impact of the project. Such evaluations are crucial for obtaining necessary clearances for large-scale developments.
The establishment of the New Agra Urban Centre is strategically positioned to accommodate the anticipated increase in population resulting from the upcoming Noida International Airport. With the airport expected to commence passenger operations soon, it is projected to attract both domestic and international tourists. Given its proximity to Agra, home to the iconic Taj Mahal, the airport is said to become a key aviation gateway to one of the world's most renowned landmarks.
Furthermore, the rise in tourism activity facilitated by the airport necessitates the creation of additional tourism facilities in the region. The envisioned project aims to enhance the investment climate and promote economic development by fostering a sustainable environment conducive to growth.
The jurisdiction of the Yamuna Expressway Authority extends beyond Noida to encompass areas along the 165 km-long expressway, including Bulandshahr, Mathura, Aligarh, and Agra. While master plans have been established for other regions, the absence of such a plan for Agra shows the need for comprehensive planning to support the development around the tourist city.
The environmental impact assessment for the New Agra Urban Centre holds particular significance due to its proximity to the Taj Mahal. Stringent measures are required to mitigate pollution risks and preserve the historical monument's integrity. The emphasis on promoting green industries underscores the commitment to regulating pollution and safeguarding the region's environmental heritage.
With control over numerous villages across six districts, the Yamuna Expressway Authority is well-positioned to oversee the holistic development of the region. The forthcoming master plan will prioritise factors such as quality of life, amenities, and natural resource preservation, taking into account the anticipated footfall at the Noida airport in the initial years.
As the Noida International Airport in Jewar nears completion, the region is poised for transformative growth. The successful implementation of the New Agra Urban Centre project is expected to catalyse economic development and elevate the region's stature as a vibrant hub of commerce and tourism.
