In a bid to address the pressing housing needs of Pune's rising population, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has unveiled ambitious plans for affordable housing projects. These initiatives aim to cater to the requirements of the city's floating population, many of whom struggle to afford even low-cost accommodations.
PMC's City Engineer, Prashant Waghmare, disclosed that the corporation has introduced rental housing projects, recognizing the financial constraints faced by many migrants arriving in Pune from various parts of Maharashtra and beyond. The first such project is slated for development in Baner.
Additionally, PMC officials revealed plans for an affordable housing project and a slum rehabilitation scheme in Gultekdi, leveraging the corporation's sizable land holdings spanning 21 acres in the area.
Acknowledging challenges hindering the implementation of housing schemes, PMC officials highlighted the need to review the charges associated with approval processes, particularly citing heavy regularization fees as a deterrent. Efforts are underway to address this issue, with PMC working towards adjusting the charges in collaboration with state authorities.
PMC's budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 reflects a substantial increase in revenue targets from building permissions, signaling the corporation's commitment to ramping up housing initiatives. With a target of INR 2,492.83 crore set for the current fiscal year from building permissions, PMC has already collected INR 2,000 crore till the end of February.
Furthermore, PMC is eyeing the development of town planning schemes in merged villages, aiming to enhance infrastructure and amenities such as drainage systems, roads, water supply lines, schools, and healthcare facilities in these areas. This strategic approach is expected to alleviate pressure on existing infrastructure in densely populated urban areas.
As PMC forges ahead with its housing agenda, stakeholders remain hopeful that these initiatives will not only address immediate housing needs but also foster inclusive urban development in Pune.
