The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is embarking on ambitious infrastructure projects to enhance connectivity in Mumbai's Western Suburbs. A tender has been floated for the design and construction of a bridge spanning from Madh to Versova, receiving Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) clearances on January 17. The estimated cost for this Madh-Versova bridge stands at INR 1800 crores, with a projected construction period of 36 months. This bridge, spanning 600 meters and featuring a 300-meter cable-stayed segment, aims to provide direct connectivity between the two locations, addressing the current reliance on ferry services due to the lack of road connectivity.
In addition to the Madh-Versova Bridge, the BMC has invited tenders for another crucial project: the construction of an elevated road to establish east-west connectivity over the Khar subway, linking the western and eastern parts of Bandra. This project, estimated at INR 1300 crores, is slated for completion within 42 months. It aims to alleviate traffic congestion around the Khar subway area, particularly by facilitating an exit towards the Western Express Highway.
The Madh-Versova bridge, initially proposed in 2015, has undergone significant deliberation to navigate environmental concerns and community feedback. Previous opposition from the fishing community in Versova-Madh due to potential disruptions to boat parking necessitated revisions to the bridge's design. Moreover, the alignment of the bridge passing through a dense mangrove cover and coastal regulatory zone mandated extensive environmental clearances, delaying the project's progress. The cable-stayed design over Versova Creek, aims to provide a direct road link between Madh Island and Versova, augmenting existing ferry services and reducing reliance on the Western Express Highway or SV road for commuting, especially during the monsoon season when ferry services are suspended.
The elevated road project over the Khar subway seeks to streamline east-west connectivity in Bandra, offering relief from congestion and enhancing overall transportation efficiency. This comprehensive approach to infrastructure development underscores BMC's commitment to addressing urban mobility challenges while balancing environmental considerations and community needs.
Furthermore, BMC's proactive measures include consultations with stakeholders, such as the fishing community, to ensure that infrastructure projects align with local requirements and minimize adverse impacts on the environment. The inclusion of temporary culverts during construction works for the Madh-Versova bridge demonstrates BMC's commitment to preserving mangrove ecosystems and mitigating environmental degradation.
In conclusion, BMC's initiatives reflect a holistic approach to urban development, integrating transportation infrastructure with environmental sustainability and community engagement. These projects are poised to significantly improve connectivity and mobility in Mumbai's western suburbs, laying the foundation for a more efficient and resilient urban transportation network.
