Pune Municipal Corporation to reprint 4.5 lac property tax bills

This year the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will be delayed in sending out property tax notices as the civic body has to reprint over 4.5 lac property tax bills. The bills are usually sent out around the first week of April. This has been brought about due to the state’s decision to offer a forty percent tax reduction for self-occupied properties. The local postal services will be used to distribute over 10 lac bills and is set to cost the civic body over Rs 50 lacs. Previously, the civic body had used private agencies which led to several problems.

The property tax department periodically assess properties to gauge whether they are self-occupied or have been rented out. The Pune government discontinued a scheme in 2019 which has previously offered tax discounts to self-occupied properties. On the discontinuation of the scheme, the civic body had begun charging arrears for the previous years due to a lack of clarity. However, after the state provided clarification on the same, the civic body has now decided to recalculate and therefore reprint the property tax bills.

In conclusion, the decision by the Pune Municipal Corporation to reprint over 4.5 lac property tax bills may result in a delay in sending out notices, but it is a necessary step to ensure that property owners are charged the correct amount of tax. he decision to use local postal services for distribution is expected to cost the civic body over Rs 50 lacs, but it is a more reliable option than private agencies that have caused problems in the past. With this move, the civic body is taking steps to ensure transparency and fairness in its taxation system.
