Wistron and Karnataka Government to establish laptop manufacturing hub near Bengaluru

The Karnataka government has entered into a significant memorandum of understanding with Wistron, a Taiwan-based company specializing in ICT Service Management Solutions, to establish a laptop manufacturing plant near Bengaluru. This collaboration involves a substantial investment of Rs 1,500 crore by Wistron and has the potential to generate approximately 3,000 employment opportunities.

M B Patil, the Minister for Large and Medium Industries, revealed that Wistron has formally requested 32 acres of land for the proposed project. The government is actively considering allocating the necessary land in the Bengaluru region. The multinational corporation, recognized for its technology services, aims to kickstart the construction of the plant in July 2024, with laptop manufacturing operations slated to begin by January 2026.

This manufacturing unit is set to be a pioneering endeavour in Karnataka as it is dedicated exclusively to the production of laptops. Adhering to Industry 4.0 standards, the facility will feature full automation and will cater to the production of laptops for various brands. Moreover, a noteworthy aspect of the initiative is the anticipation that over 50% of the laptops manufactured at this plant will be exported. Additionally, the facility will later extend its production to include components for the Internet of Things (IoT) and parts related to Electric Vehicles (EVs).

Minister Patil emphasized that beyond contributing to the electronics manufacturing sector, the collaboration is a strategic move to spur innovation, create employment opportunities, and position Karnataka as a frontrunner in the electronics manufacturing industry. Key personnel from Wistron, including Alec Lai (President of Global Manufacturing), Dennis Hung (Senior Director), Rachael Lu (General Manager), and Sudhir C (Manager of Wistron Corp), along with government officials such as S Selvakumar (Principal Secretary) and Gunjan Krishna (Department of Industries), were present during the signing of the memorandum.
