In a significant development, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai apprehended Lalit Tekchandani, a prominent builder, in connection with a cheating and forgery case. The case revolves around accusations that Tekchandani and other directors of Supreme Constructions accepted payments from homebuyers for flats in their Taloja project but failed to deliver on their promises.
Numerous flat buyers who had invested in the Taloja project at the builder's Chembur office found themselves to be at the center of the controversy. Consequently, on January 15, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against Lalit Tekchandani, his wife Kajal, Arun Makhija, Mirza Hasan Ibrahim, and other directors at the Chembur police station. The charges include cheating and forgery, with an estimated cheating amount of INR 73 lakh mentioned in the FIR.
In response to the severity of the accusations, the police had issued a lookout circular notice against Tekchandani and his associates. The case was later transferred to the Economic Offences Wing on January 20 for further investigation.
According to an EOW officer, efforts are underway to gather information about additional buyers and the amounts they invested in the Taloja project. One of the aggrieved homebuyers, Hera Jadhwani, disclosed that Arun Makhija, a company executive, had assured her that the Hex City project would be completed by 2017. Jadhwani had paid INR 36 lakh for a 1 BHK, along with INR 1.8 lakh for registration and INR 5 lakh for parking.
Other affected buyers shared their grievances, revealing that construction had halted in 2016. An EOW officer commented on the situation, noting that there is a structure at the site, but the building is still incomplete. As the investigation continues to unfold, authorities are aiming to unravel the extent of the alleged fraud and provide a resolution to the deceived homebuyers.
