The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is grappling with uncertainty as the completion of 30,000 double bedroom houses in the city hinges on the sanction of Rs 1,500 crore funding from the government. These 2-BHK homes were initiated during the previous government's tenure but are at a standstill now as GHMC awaits budgetary approval from the new government to resume construction.
The housing initiative, launched in 2015 by the previous government, aimed to provide dignified and 100% subsidized housing for the underprivileged. The scheme was launched to fulfill the government's objective of providing permanent housing to all eligible BPL families. Urban allotments within GHMC areas adhere to a reservation policy with SC category receiving 17%, ST 6%, minorities 12%, and others 65%.
The government pledged to allocate 1 lakh units across 111 different areas in Greater Hyderabad, with 68,800 2-BHKs already distributed. GHMC has distributed double bedroom houses in various localities across the city, including Kollur, Cherlapally, Ameenpur, Bahadurpally, Dundigal, Narsingi, Shankarpalli, Nallagandla, Muraharipalli, Chaitanyanagar, Rampally, and Thumukunta.
However, works for the remaining 31,000 units were put on hold for the last one and a half years. While some of these 2-BHKs were just 10% constructed, a few of them were near completion. So far, nearly Rs 7,000 crore has been spent on the construction of double bedroom houses. GHMC says that once the government releases Rs 1,500 crore, they will resume the work as it already has to recover Rs 400 crore towards pending bills from the government.
Simultaneously, GHMC has issued tenders for internet/broadband and cable TV services for its 2-BHK projects in various locations. Interested service providers must have experience in providing similar services for each 2-BHK unit. While in-site locations have access to existing services, areas outside GHMC limits require additional infrastructure for internet/broadband and cable TV services.
