In an endeavor to uplift particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs), Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to release the initial installment of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Gramin scheme during the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN). Launched in November, this initiative focuses on the holistic development of 75 PVTGs, with a budget of Rs 24,104 crore. Within a mere two months, more than Rs 4,700 crore worth of projects spanning housing, roads, anganwadis, hostels, and electrification have received approval from nine ministries.
The PM's interaction with beneficiaries from PVTGs, scheduled via video conferencing in over 100 districts, underscores the government's commitment to tribal outreach. Launched on 'Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas' from Khunti on the birth anniversary of tribal icon Birsa Munda, the PM-JANMAN aligns with the vision of Antyodaya, aiming to empower the last person at the last mile.
Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda, hailing the Abhiyan as a robust stride, emphasizes its role in addressing the needs of PVTG households. The mission, spanning three years, targets comprehensive improvement in socio-economic conditions. It employs 11 critical interventions across nine ministries, ensuring PVTG households and habitations receive essential facilities such as safe housing, clean water, sanitation, education, health, nutrition, electricity, road and telecom connectivity, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Apart from housing initiatives, the government has sanctioned 1,207 kilometers of roads out of a total 8,000 kilometers targeted for 2023-26. Additionally, the Ministry of Education has approved 100 hostels out of the planned 500, and 916 anganwadis with a target of 2,500 by 2023-2026. Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda sees this as a significant step in addressing the ground-level needs of PVTGs.
Over the last three weeks, more than 7,000 camps have been organized in PVTG habitations across 188 districts, facilitated by UIDAI, CSC, NHA, Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Power, and the Department of Financial Services. These camps aim to assist in obtaining Aadhar cards, opening Jan Dhan accounts, issuing Ayushman cards, and registering for various schemes under the mission.
Recent data shared by the government highlights the impact of these efforts. In the last 25 days, 70,000 new Aadhaar cards and 82,000 Ayushman Bharat cards have been issued. Furthermore, 10,396 beneficiaries have been granted individual forest rights under the Forest Rights Act, and 49,916 caste certificates have been issued. These statistics underscore the mission's effectiveness in bridging the gap for habitations and individuals previously left out of flagship schemes due to remoteness and lack of connectivity.
As the BJP-led government focuses on tribal outreach ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the PM-JANMAN mission emerges as a pivotal strategy, demonstrating a comprehensive and targeted approach to address the unique challenges faced by particularly vulnerable tribal groups across the nation.
