Maharashtra Government allocates Rs 239.60 crore for 'Maharashtra Pavilion' at National Maritime Heritage Complex

The Maharashtra Government has approved a contribution of Rs 239.60 crore towards the construction of a 'Maharashtra Pavilion' at the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat. The state home department issued the order on December 5, entrusting the cultural affairs department with overseeing the project.

The 'Maharashtra Pavilion' aims to showcase the rich maritime history of the state, emphasising its key role in international trade during ancient and medieval periods. Notably, ports like Nalasopara were prominently featured on international port maps. Additionally, it will highlight the visionary leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who established the Maratha kingdom's first navy in medieval times to counter British and Portuguese naval forces.

An official involved in the project explained that the allocated funds would play a crucial role in depicting Maharashtra's maritime heritage, including its historical ports and the strategic navy established under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The National Maritime Heritage Complex, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2019, is an ambitious undertaking with an estimated cost ranging between Rs 3,500-4,500 crore. The complex is set to feature museums, amusement parks, hotels, and recreations of ancient cities like Dholavira and Lothal.

The Gujarat government, spearheading the NMHC project, has already contributed Rs 2150 crore and provided crucial land and infrastructure support. The complex is on track for completion by March 2024, offering a comprehensive exploration of India's maritime history for enthusiasts and visitors alike.

The Maharashtra government's allocation for the 'Maharashtra Pavilion' at the National Maritime Heritage Complex reflects a commitment to preserving and showcasing the state's significant maritime history. The initiative aligns with the broader vision of the NMHC project, emphasizing the cultural significance of India's maritime heritage and fostering a deeper understanding of historical narratives.
