The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has collected Rs 465.70 crore in property tax during the initial nine months of the fiscal year 2023–24, in contrast to the Rs 398.65 crore collected in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. Property tax constitutes a substantial chunk of the NMMC's revenue, and Navi Mumbai stands as a prominent industrial hub within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The commendable success in tax collection is attributable to the concerted efforts of Additional Commissioner Sujata Dhole and the dedication of the Property Tax Department.
Under the strategic guidance of NMMC Chief Rajesh Narvekar, a targeted approach was employed, compiling a descending order list of arrears and assigning specific collection objectives to each department office. Continuous review and close monitoring ensured the successful implementation of these strategies, with special emphasis on recovering long-pending arrears, including those from prior assessments.
Emphasizing the recovery of long-pending arrears, the civic body prioritized the utilization of data from newly assessed properties. Additionally, the first phase of the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging—a remote sensing and surveying technology) survey was conducted in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area, as per an official release.
With three months remaining in the fiscal year, the NMMC has set an ambitious target of Rs 800 crore in property tax collection for 2023–24. Expressing gratitude to conscientious citizens who promptly fulfilled their property tax obligations, Chief Narvekar extended his appreciation. Simultaneously, he issued a reminder to defaulters, urging them to settle arrears promptly to avoid any potential legal consequences. The corporation has asserted its unwavering commitment to take stringent action against those failing to meet payment deadlines.
