BMC cracks down on air pollution, 859 construction sites issued stop-work notices in Mumbai

In the past two months, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken strict measures against air pollution, issuing stop-work notices to 859 construction sites in Mumbai. The BMC has also imposed fines of Rs 2 lakh each on two construction firms located in the Grant Road area for violating pollution control norms. A total of 2,955 constructions received notices for non-compliance, with 603 sites receiving show-cause notices and 859 construction sites receiving stop-work notices during this period.

The BMC's actions come in response to the deteriorating Air Quality Index in Mumbai following the monsoon season, prompting the issuance of guidelines on October 25 to mitigate air pollution. The guidelines mandated the use of sprinklers and fogging machines at construction sites to effectively suppress dust and mitigate the impact on air quality.
