Assam CM set to inaugurate India’s biggest PMAY colony in Dibrugarh

Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to inaugurate the largest Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) colony in Naharkatia, Dibrugarh district, during the Magh Bihu festival in January. Spread across 32 bighas of land within the Namsang tea estate near the Assam-Arunachal border, the colony is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore and features 113 housing units.

Designed as an integrated settlement, the colony offers various amenities such as a children's park, an Anganwadi centre, solar-powered systems, a technical training centre, and provisions for animal rearing, poultry, and beekeeping, promoting sustainable living.

Dibrugarh district commissioner Bikram Kairi, while assessing the project's progress, highlighted that the Naharkatia PMAY colony, with 113 housing units, will surpass the current largest PMAY colony in Uttar Pradesh, which has 100 housing units. Kairi mentioned that the project is nearly complete, with only the painting of the houses remaining.

Naharkatia MLA Taranga Gogoi unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the banks of the picturesque Burhi Dihing river, located near Namsang, into a thriving tourist destination. Emphasising the area's potential, Gogoi outlined the vision to develop eco-friendly resorts, adventure sports facilities, and recreational centres along the riverbanks. The plan also includes collaboration with private investors to establish restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops, enhancing the overall tourist experience.

Gogoi emphasised that the aim extends beyond attracting tourists; it also includes creating employment opportunities for the local youth. By harnessing the potential of the riverbank, the initiative aims to generate a range of job opportunities, uplifting the local economy. The transformative plans align with the broader goal of making the Burhi Dihing river bank a significant contributor to Assam's tourism sector.

The Naharkatia PMAY colony, with its comprehensive facilities and sustainable features, represents a notable milestone in affordable housing initiatives. The integration of amenities and provisions for self-sustenance, such as animal rearing and beekeeping, reflects a holistic approach to community development. The parallel vision for the Burhi Dihing riverbank showcases a strategic effort to leverage natural assets for tourism development, unlocking opportunities for employment and economic prosperity in the picturesque surroundings. It symbolises a significant step towards providing quality housing and fostering economic growth in the region.
