L&T secures prestigious EPC contract for Amaala project in Saudi Arabia

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a substantial Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract, exceeding Rs 5,000 crore, for implementing renewable energy and power systems in Saudi Arabia's Amaala project. Positioned as the turnkey contractor, L&T will contribute to establishing diverse systems for the ultra-luxury resort destination sprawled over 4,155 square kilometres along the Red Sea.
Amaala, situated in the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Natural Reserve, integrates solar-powered energy, luxurious hotels, residential properties, and natural ecosystems. The contract, valued between Rs 5,000 crore and Rs 10,000 crore, involves an off-grid renewable energy system featuring a 250MWp Solar PV plant and a 700MWh Battery Energy Storage System.
The comprehensive scope of the project encompasses water systems, including the construction of a 37 MLD Seawater Reverse Osmosis Plant, 6 MLD sewage treatment plants, marine works (intake and outfall), tank farms, potable water network, wastewater network, and treated sewage effluent network. L&T has entered into an EPC agreement with Amaala's developers, comprising a consortium of Masdar, a UAE-based clean energy powerhouse, and EDF, the French Electricity utility. This marks another significant achievement for L&T in West Asia, particularly Saudi Arabia, with the company reporting new order wins totalling Rs 89,153 crore for the quarter ending September 2023, with over two-thirds from international markets and more than 80% from West Asia.
Projects like Amaala align with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 initiative, aimed at diversifying the economy and reducing dependence on oil revenues. Amaala stands out as a visionary development, powered by renewable energy and incorporating sustainability measures. L&T's role in executing this project underscores its expertise and prominence in the global infrastructure landscape. The company's successful ventures in West Asia contribute significantly to its international order book and reinforce its leadership in delivering complex, large-scale projects.
As Amaala progresses, it will serve as a testament to collaborative efforts, innovative engineering solutions, and sustainable practices. L&T's involvement in this transformative project enhances its reputation as a preferred partner for cutting-edge developments in the region and positions it at the forefront of realizing sustainable, luxury tourism destinations on a global scale.
