PMC dismantles illegal structures in green belt area, upholding NGT directives

In a significant move, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) executed an anti-encroachment operation, levelling 15 illicit structures spanning 1.5 lakh sq ft within the green belt along DP Road, situated between the Rajaram and Mhatre bridges. This initiative by the PMC involved the active participation of about 50 individuals, including police officers, collectively engaged in the anti-encroachment drive.
Acting in accordance with National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives, PMC issued notices to establishments, including marriage halls, lawns, and food joints in the specified area. While some proprietors voluntarily dismantled unlawful extensions, the civic administration took action against those who disregarded directives. PMC officials disclosed the removal of approximately 6,000 cubic feet of sand, which can be employed for reclamation near the riverbank. This sand was transported to the Wagholi quarry via six dumpers.
In response to an NGT case, PMC filed an affidavit in October. The document underscored that the PMC categorically denied granting permission for temporary booths and pandals within the blue line area of the Mula-Mutha river. The affidavit detailed a joint inspection conducted on August 3, 2023, in collaboration with the irrigation department. The findings revealed that 30 properties had been erected within the blue line of the river.
Subsequently, the NGT directed PMC to issue notices to the encroachers and enforce the demolition of the illegal structures. This NGT order granted a two-month window to PMC to execute necessary actions and submit a comprehensive compliance report to NGT.
PMC asserted its proactive stance in eliminating unlawful encroachments on DP Road, leading to the issuance of notices to 84 property owners, compelling them to either rectify unauthorized developments or desist from illegal construction activities.
In alignment with the timeline given by NGT, PMC issued a statement reiterating its commitment to submitting the action report to NGT by the deadline. This signifies a crucial step towards adhering to legal directives and restoring the sanctity of the green belt, underscoring the municipality's dedication to environmental preservation and regulatory compliance.
