BMRCL initiates land acquisition for Namma Metro Phase 3, paving the way for transformative expansion

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is set to initiate initial activities related to land acquisition for Phase 3 of the Namma Metro project soon. The first phase involves identifying 100 acres of land for constructing a depot and viaducts along certain sections of the corridor. Officials anticipate that a joint survey of the identified properties for acquisition will commence shortly.
Under Phase 3, BMRCL aims to develop two Metro lines—a 32.1km line from Kempapura to JP Nagar on Outer Ring Road and a 12.5km line from Hosahalli to Kadabagere on Magadi Road. The final approval for the project is currently pending before the central government.
Following the directives of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, BMRCL has made adjustments in the procurement process for rolling stock on the Magadi Road line.
The estimated cost of the project is Rs 15,600 crore, and the state government granted approval for the project in November 2022. Recently, the finance department gave consent to initiate land acquisition, with the condition that the state cabinet's approval is mandatory before incurring expenses for compensating the affected properties. BMRCL sources indicate that the entire process of land acquisition and taking possession of the properties is expected to take six months.
Of the designated 100 acres, 75 acres are earmarked for constructing a depot on Magadi Road near Byadarahalli police station. This proposed depot will serve both lines envisioned under Phase 3 and is projected to be the largest Metro depot in the city, situated next to the existing Peenya depot, which spans 100 acres.
The alignment of the proposed lines passes through Peenya, with plans to provide access to the existing Peenya depot. Additionally, 25 acres of land have been identified for the construction of viaducts. The joint survey of properties is imminent, followed by the issuance of a preliminary notification.
A BMRCL official stated that the planning section has been tasked with submitting land acquisition requirements for every 10km of the proposed lines. The alignment of the proposed line follows the median of the road, and for station construction, the planning section is finalizing land requirements based on various considerations. Notifications for property acquisition will be issued for every 10km stretch of the proposed lines.
In conclusion, as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) gears up to initiate preliminary activities for Phase 3 of the Namma Metro project, a promising trajectory unfolds for the city's expanding public transportation network. The identification of 100 acres for a depot and viaducts marks the initial steps towards the realization of two crucial Metro lines, promising enhanced connectivity across key areas.
