Nagpur Municipal Corporation seizes five properties for Rs 28 lakh tax non-payment

In a recent development, the Mangalwari zone of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) took stringent action against property tax defaulters, attaching five open plots situated in Gorewada, Hazaripahad, and Borgaon. The move, aimed at recovering a substantial sum of Rs 28 lakh in unpaid property taxes, transpired last week. Assistant Municipal Commissioner Prakash Warade, spearheading the initiative, issued seizure warrants against a total of 15 property tax defaulters within the Mangalwari zone. In response to this enforcement action, 10 property owners promptly appeared and settled their outstanding tax dues, contributing a sum of Rs 4.50 lakh towards the municipal coffers. However, a group of five property owners expressed their inability to clear the accumulated NMC dues, amounting to a substantial Rs 28 lakh. Unwilling to tolerate continued non-compliance, the civic body took decisive action by collectively attaching their properties, which are estimated to be worth Rs 8.15 crore at prevailing market rates. Assistant Municipal Commissioner Warade emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the seized properties will now be subjected to auction proceedings in order to recover the outstanding tax amount. The attachment of properties serves as a stern reminder to property owners regarding the importance of meeting their civic responsibilities and fulfilling their financial obligations to the municipality. This move aligns with the municipality's ongoing efforts to enhance revenue collection and ensure that property owners fulfil their tax obligations promptly. The auctioning of the attached properties is poised to be a critical step in recouping the owed Rs 28 lakh, sending a clear message about the municipality's commitment to enforcing tax compliance. The NMC's proactive approach in addressing property tax defaulters underscores the significance of adhering to financial commitments for the overall betterment of civic amenities and services. As the attached properties proceed to auction, it remains to be seen how successful this enforcement action will be in not only reclaiming the overdue taxes but also deterring future instances of property tax delinquency within the Mangalwari zone of Nagpur.
