Kolkata development body starts razing drive to reclaim plots off Bypass

The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has initiated a campaign to reclaim its plots that have been encroached upon in Kasba and Patuli near the EM Bypass. The authorities have launched a demolition drive to bring down the illegal constructions on the plots and fence off the land. The KMDA plans to auction off the parcels of land after the removal of the unauthorized structures, generating substantial revenues for the state coffers.

The KMDA pulled down several unauthorized structures, including a three-story building, on two plots near the Gitanjali Stadium in Kasba on Monday. The authorities plan to auction off the land once the demolition is complete and the plots are fenced off.

Prompted by the Urban Development Department, a survey was conducted to identify vacant plots in the city and assess their condition. The survey revealed that many KMDA plots had been encroached upon by illegal constructions. Officials stated that several allocated plots had been left unused, and they planned to send notices to the owners.

The KMDA's decision to reclaim its plots and auction them off is a positive move that could generate significant revenue for the state. Moreover, this campaign could help prevent land encroachment in the future, ensuring that the plots are used appropriately and for their intended purposes. By sending notices to owners of allotted land and imposing fines for non-compliance, the KMDA can encourage prompt construction, reducing the number of unused plots. This could help increase realty growth and lead to the development of more residential and commercial projects.
