The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) of Maharashtra, in collaboration with Omkar Realtors, has successfully allocated 1,000 homes in the world's tallest rehabilitation towers situated at the iconic Dhobi Ghat in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai. This landmark project, which had already provided shelter to over 900 families by October 2023, is a significant step towards transforming the lives of slum residents in the city.
Under the umbrella of the Maharashtra government's slum rehabilitation scheme, the Dhobi Ghat project aims to house approximately 16,000 slum dwellers in phases. The Dhobi Ghat, renowned as one of the largest outdoor open laundries globally, primarily employs residents from the vicinity in laundry-related services. This project is situated more than 150 meters away from the heritage site, thereby retaining its natural charm.
Spanning across 12 acres of prime land in South Mumbai's Mahalaxmi area, the project features luxury housing units with stunning views of the racecourse and the Arabian Sea.
It is a collaborative effort between Omkar and Piramal Realty and is expected to provide a much-needed relief to the dhobis (laundry workers) and individuals engaged in associated labour, including dyeing, drying, transportation, and ironing.
The latest allocation carried out by the SRA authority will result in approximately 10,000 slum residents owning homes within the Dhobi Ghat project in the current year. For Omkar, this accomplishment reflects their commitment to providing housing for over 16,000 residents across our various projects in Mumbai, making it the highest delivery figure in 2023 under the state government's Slum Rehabilitation Scheme.
The Dhobi Ghat slum rehabilitation project has also set a qualitative benchmark for rehabilitation development. It boasts state-of-the-art construction and includes spaces for welfare centres, society offices, and balwadis (educational facilities). Notably, the 4-towered SRA project is equipped with 16 elevators from the renowned German brand Schindler, typically found in premium housing developments.
