The Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) has expressed deep concerns about the alarming surge in unauthorized construction activities taking place within the industrial estates of Sachin, Katargam, Pandesara, Ichhapore, and Khatodra in the bustling city of Surat. This surge has prompted the GIDC to seek the intervention of law enforcement agencies, particularly the Surat Police, to address the pressing issue of these illegal structures.
In a decisive and urgent move, the GIDC has formally reached out to the Surat Police Commissioner, making an appeal for the deployment of law enforcement personnel to combat the unabated wave of unlawful constructions within these strategic industrial zones. The GIDC's letter to the Surat Police Commissioner emphasized the blatant disregard for regulatory norms displayed by several industrial plot owners who have initiated or completed unauthorized expansions of their industrial units.
The Regional Manager of GIDC in Surat, in the formal letter, articulated the distressing transformation of these industrial estates into hotspots for unsanctioned construction activities. These alleged violations encompass extensions and new constructions by plot owners representing various business sectors, all carried out without obtaining the essential approvals from GIDC authorities.
In response to this growing predicament, the GIDC has formally requested the assistance of approximately 210 police officers, spanning various ranks from police inspectors to constables, as well as police vans to facilitate the enforcement effort. The joint operation's primary goal is to initiate a comprehensive demolition drive within the five GIDC estates in Surat, with a notable emphasis on deploying the largest contingent of 75 officers to the Sachin GIDC to tackle the proliferation of unauthorized structures in that specific area.
Members of the Sachin Industrial Co-operative Society Limited have expressed their concerns and opposition to the GIDC's actions, suggesting that the ruling society at Sachin GIDC may have played a role in influencing the GIDC and the state government to take what they view as illegal actions.
Insiders familiar with the situation have shed light on the fact that some industrial unit owners have been able to acquire plots within the GIDC area at exceptionally low prices. This affordability has, in turn, incentivized these plot owners to engage in unauthorized construction activities as a means of expanding their business operations, regardless of the regulatory constraints in place.
In conclusion, the unauthorized construction issue in the GIDC industrial estates in Surat is a matter of significant concern, with far-reaching implications for regulatory compliance, safety, and environmental impact. The GIDC's call for police intervention signals a decisive effort to address these challenges and restore order within these crucial economic zones. The outcome of this enforcement action will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the industrial landscape in Surat and the adherence to established norms in the region.
