Kochi Metro's Phase II proceeds with land acquisition

The revenue department in Kochi has issued 11(1) notification to facilitate the acquisition of land for five metro stations on Phase II of the Kochi Metro, with notifications for two more stations expected soon. The stations slated for land acquisition are Palarivattom Junction, Kakkanad, Cochin SEZ, Chitethukara, and Kinfra. Approximately 0.9544 hectares of land from Edappally South and Kakkanad villages will be acquired for station construction.
An additional 11(1) notification is set to be issued for the acquisition of land for the Palarivattom Bypass station and Vazhakkala station in the following week.
The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has reiterated its commitment to making the Phase II metro stations eco-friendly and incorporating modern architectural designs. The construction timeline is set with a goal of completing the civil construction work of the pink line within 20 months, followed by system and signalling works within an additional 4 months.
To expedite the construction process, the KMRL is planning to undertake viaduct work at six locations and four station locations simultaneously. This parallel construction strategy is aimed at minimizing delays and ensuring the timely completion of the metro expansion. Unlike Phase I, the construction of stations in Phase II will make use of the precast method, enhancing efficiency and precision in the construction process.
It's worth noting that concerns have been raised regarding the potential impact of the metro construction on the St. Michael's Church. In response, the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) report has recommended that the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) consider maintaining adequate space between the newly renovated church and the metro alignment. This move aims to address concerns and mitigate any adverse effects on the historic church and its surroundings.
In summary, the issuance of land acquisition notifications for the Phase II metro stations in Kochi represents a positive step towards the expansion of the city's public transportation infrastructure. With a commitment to eco-friendly design and an efficient construction approach, the authorities are focused on delivering a modern and convenient metro network for the residents of Kochi. The proactive measures undertaken, along with plans to address concerns related to the St. Michael's Church, demonstrate a dedication to ensuring that the expansion proceeds smoothly and benefits the community.
