Pune Metro Phase II to extend to Nigdi with minimal land acquisition

The Pune metro's extension to Nigdi has received the green light from the Union government, with a project budget exceeding Rs 900 crore. Actual construction work is anticipated to commence in February, and a preliminary survey is already underway to identify station locations and entry-exit points. The extension will include stations at Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi, specifically at Bhakti-Shakti chowk. Notably, this project does not require significant land acquisition, as it follows the existing Pune-Mumbai highway median for its 4.4 km route with minimal deviations. Completion of the extension is expected to take over three years.
Currently, a viaduct has been extended beyond the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) station, with plans to further extend it towards Chinchwad. Officials are in the process of finalizing the execution plan, with specific attention given to the viaduct alignment at the Nigdi chowk and Bhakti Shakti chowk flyovers.
Collaborative discussions between officials and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will soon take place to determine station locations and any land requirements. This coordinated effort aims to prevent complications during the project's execution.
The extension of the Pune metro to Nigdi is expected to offer significant advantages, particularly to industrial workers in the Chinchwad and Akurdi regions. Additionally, it will benefit students commuting to educational institutions in Nigdi and Akurdi.
However, some regular commuters express their disappointment at the timeline of 3 years for this extension, suggesting that it should have been incorporated during Phase 1 of the metro project.
In summary, the green light for the Pune metro's extension to Nigdi marks a significant development. The project's budget of over Rs 900 crore will drive the construction, set to begin in February. Minimal land acquisition requirements and coordination with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation aim to streamline the process and provide relief to the ever increasing commuter traffic in the region.
