Following the dispatch of notices to property tax defaulters by the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), a notable surge in tax payments has occurred within the past week, with over 27,000 individuals contributing a total of Rs 16 crore. Anticipating further compliance, civic authorities expect these defaulters to make substantial payments, potentially amounting to between Rs 50 and Rs 75 crore, by the close of November. This proactive move comes on the heels of NMC's recent issuance of notices to 2.37 lakh individuals who had accrued significant property tax arrears totalling a substantial Rs 470 crore.
These notices served as a stark ultimatum, granting the recipients a mere 15-day window to settle their longstanding dues. Failure to comply within this stipulated timeframe would inevitably set in motion the legal process for the issuance of tax recovery warrants. The delinquent taxes at stake have languished unpaid for a span of four to nine years. The NMC, with an ambitious property tax collection target of Rs 210 crore for the current fiscal year (2023–24), has received a mandate from its commissioner, Ashok Karanjkar, who has set a stringent deadline of December 31, urging the property tax department to rigorously pursue this collection goal.
Concurrently, municipal officials have broadened their scope to encompass the recovery of property tax dues from numerous state and central government offices. This additional facet of their efforts seeks to reclaim over Rs 20 crore in delinquent taxes spread across approximately 20–25 government offices. Promisingly, the NMC has already managed to secure Rs 4 crore in property tax dues from two government offices, signifying a positive trajectory in this endeavour. Furthermore, in a bid to ascertain property values owned by central government departments, assessments are underway as authorities strive to determine applicable service taxes.
This proactive approach is forecast to yield a supplementary Rs 10–12 crore in revenue. In the current financial year, the civic body has emerged triumphant in its property tax collection efforts, amassing an impressive Rs 135 crore. This substantial increase in tax collections represents a remarkable jump from the Rs 106 crore collected during the corresponding period of the preceding fiscal year. The Nashik Municipal Corporation remains resolute in its commitment to augment property tax collection and foster a culture of fiscal compliance among taxpayers. In tandem with these endeavours, the NMC is steadfastly working to achieve its annual collection target while addressing arrears and ushering in a new era of revenue generation.
