Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina virtually inaugurated three significant development projects, highlighting the growing collaboration and connectivity between the two nations. The projects include the Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link, the Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line, and Unit 2 of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant.
The Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link is the first railway connection between India's north eastern states and Bangladesh. The project is expected to boost cross-border trade and significantly reduce travel time between Agartala and Kolkata via Dhaka. It's worth noting that India has extended substantial grant assistance to support this railway link.
The Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line project, implemented with Indian concessional credit, involves the construction of a 65-kilometer broad-gauge rail route connecting Mongla Port with the existing rail network in Khulna. This connection facilitates the movement of goods through container wagons from Mongla to various parts of Bangladesh, helping reduce dependence on Chittagong Port. Furthermore, this rail link may enhance regional trade, benefiting India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
The rail link between Tripura's Nischintapur and Bangladesh's Gangasagar is particularly noteworthy, as it significantly improves connectivity, reduces travel distances, and opens up opportunities for trade and tourism.
The Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant is a joint venture between the Bangladesh Power Development Board and India's NTPC. This 1,320 MW power plant is expected to address Bangladesh's growing energy needs by providing a cleaner and more reliable source of power.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of these projects in strengthening bilateral ties, and Prime Minister Hasina expressed gratitude for the collaboration, highlighting the bond of friendship and collaboration between the two countries.
