Ludhiana's Atal Apartments delay causes concern among allottees

Amidst mounting anticipation, the progress of the Atal Apartments project in Ludhiana remains stagnant, leading to rising discontent among its allottees. Although the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) had previously received the green light from the state government to construct flats for the Atal Apartments project, the actual construction work remains at a standstill. Tenders that were previously issued for additional amenities such as a community centre and multi-storey parking, both vital components of the scheme, have similarly been halted.
When approached about the reasons for the delay, LIT officials remained vague, merely stating that construction will commence shortly. Delving deeper into the matter, it has come to light that while the project had already obtained environmental clearance back in 2017 (valid until 2027), there have been some redesigning of the project. The Trust, in its caution, does not wish to begin work until the clearance is renewed, ensuring they are in full compliance.
The project, which promises as many as 576 flats spanning 8.8 acres at Karnail Singh Nagar, Pakhowal road, includes 336 HIG flats and 240 MIG flats. With an estimated budget of Rs 250 crore, the scheme has been in the pipeline since 2008. The foundation stone for this ambitious project has been laid twice – first in 2011 by then local government minister Tikshan Sood, and more recently in December 2021 by then Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
Interestingly, during the Akali-BJP government's tenure, draws for the apartments were held, only to be annulled when the Congress took the reins. The revised draws took place on June 16, 2022. Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar, the former local bodies minister, subsequently handed over allotment letters for 487 flats of the Atal Apartments Project to the successful applicants on April 10.
In conclusion, the prolonged wait for the Atal Apartments project continues to test the patience of its allottees. While the LIT's commitment to adhering to legal and environmental standards is commendable, it remains crucial to balance this caution with the pressing demands of the expectant homeowners. Only time will tell if the project will finally see the light of day or remain shrouded in uncertainty.
