Just under nine months after its inauguration by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in February, the condition of the Kopri rail over bridge (ROB) has significantly deteriorated, marked by the emergence of cracks, uneven patches, and potholes. This revealed the subpar work conducted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Central Railway authorities.
The Kopri ROB was built with the aim of alleviating traffic congestion near Mulund Check Naka. The traffic bottleneck was primarily located at the entry point to Thane city, where the traffic from the 5+5 lane Eastern Express Highway (EEH) merged with the 2+2 lane Kopri bridge. The MMRDA expanded the bridge by adding four additional lanes, increasing its length to 784 metres and width to 37 metres. The section over the railway crossing was constructed by Central Railway. Approximately 1.22 lakh vehicles traverse this bridge on a daily basis.
An expenditure of over 250 crore was incurred for the construction of the ROB. After its initial opening and subsequent repair work in July, the flyover has once more experienced the re-emergence of cracks and potholes, in addition to patchy tar repairs on the cement concrete road.
In conclusion, the deterioration of the Kopri rail overbridge highlights concerns about subpar construction and infrastructure quality in public works. Durability and safety are the basic elements to be incorporated while building long-term infrastructure.
