Nashik's Municipal Commissioner, Ashok Karanjkar, voiced his displeasure regarding the improper disposal of construction and demolition waste by certain builders and contractors. In a meeting with the civic body's Godavari pollution prevention cell, he directed officials to take stringent action against those responsible for haphazard waste disposal. Deputy Commissioner (Environment & Godavari Cell), Vijay Kumar Mundhe, emphasized that the issue of indiscriminate disposal of construction debris was thoroughly discussed during the meeting.
To address this concern, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has deployed two vehicles in each of its six divisions dedicated to lifting construction debris. Notably, the civic body has established a fixed user charge of Rs 800 per tonne for the lifting and transportation of construction waste. This would be collected from the builder or contractor.
Offenders are to face substantial fines as a consequence. The NMC is actively urging city builders and residents to approach designated divisional offices for the proper disposal of construction waste. Non-compliance will result in fines amounting to ten times the specified user charges i.e. Rs 8000 per tonne.
Simultaneously, the NMC has taken a forward-looking initiative by awarding a work order to a private agency. This agency is tasked with establishing and operating a Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste recycling plant at Pathradi, situated on the outskirts of the city. The NMC has identified approximately seven acres of land at Pathardi for the construction of this C&D waste recycling plant.
These concerted efforts underscore the municipality's commitment to responsible construction waste management and its dedication to addressing environmental concerns associated with unsystematic disposal. Commissioner Karanjkar's explicit directives to penalize violators underscore the seriousness with which the civic body is tackling this issue. Furthermore, the decision to set up a recycling plant represents a proactive step and holistic approach towards sustainable waste management in Nashik, aligning with the broader environmental goals.
